When your boat engine isn't running right, you need a mechanic who can quickly and accurately diagnose the problem — not one who's guessing and replacing parts hoping something works. Our certified marine mechanics have years of experience diagnosing every common (and uncommon) marine engine issue. We use professional diagnostic tools, systematic troubleshooting procedures, and deep knowledge of marine engine systems to find the root cause the first time. Whether your engine won't start, is losing power, overheating, or triggering alarms, we'll figure out why and fix it right.
Every diagnosis starts with listening — you know your boat better than anyone, and the symptoms you describe help us narrow down the cause. From there, we perform a systematic inspection: checking fuel delivery, ignition, compression, cooling, and electrical systems in order. On modern engines, we connect professional diagnostic scanners to read ECU data, trouble codes, and live sensor readings. This combination of experience and technology means we diagnose problems faster and more accurately than a generalist mechanic. We provide a clear explanation of what we found and a detailed estimate before any repair work begins.
If your problem is listed here, we've fixed it before — many times. If it's not listed, contact us anyway. We've probably seen it.
Engine gradually or suddenly loses power under load. Could indicate fuel delivery issues, fouled spark plugs, or a restricted exhaust.
Engine RPMs rise and fall on their own. Common causes include air leaks in the fuel system, a failing fuel pump, or dirty injectors.
Engine revs but the boat doesn't accelerate. Usually points to a propeller issue, lower unit wear, or clutch problems in the drivetrain.
Engine RPMs spike unexpectedly without corresponding acceleration. Often related to prop ventilation, throttle cable issues, or transmission problems.
Engine won't reach full RPMs. Can be caused by fuel restrictions, over-propping, a fouled hull, or electronic governor limits.
Complete loss of power or engine not producing any thrust. Requires immediate diagnostic to determine root cause — fuel, electrical, or mechanical.
Engine stumbles or bogs down under acceleration. Typically related to fuel delivery, water in fuel, or spark timing issues.
Engine cranks but won't fire, or won't crank at all. Could be a dead battery, faulty starter, ignition issue, or fuel system problem.
Engine starts but dies shortly after, or cuts out unexpectedly while running. Often caused by fuel starvation, a failing ignition component, or a safety switch issue.
Engine runs briefly then shuts off. Common causes include idle air control issues, fuel filter blockage, or faulty sensors.
Engine runs unevenly at idle — shaking, sputtering, or misfiring. May indicate fouled spark plugs, low compression, dirty injectors, or an air leak.
A clicking sound when turning the key — engine won't crank. Usually a sign of a weak battery, corroded connections, or a failing starter solenoid.
Engine continues running after turning the key off. Could be a faulty ignition switch, stuck relay, or wiring issue that needs immediate attention.
Engine temperature climbing above normal range. Common causes include a failed impeller, blocked raw water intake, thermostat failure, or a clogged heat exchanger.
No water coming from the tell-tale outlet on your outboard. This is a critical warning sign — usually means the water pump impeller has failed or the tell-tale is blocked.
Water contamination in the fuel system causes rough running, stalling, and potential engine damage. Requires fuel system draining, filter replacement, and inspection.
Dashboard alarm buzzer or warning lights activated. Engine alarms indicate overheating, low oil pressure, or other critical conditions that need immediate diagnosis.
Visible oil dripping or pooling around the engine. Could be a failed gasket, loose drain plug, cracked oil cooler, or worn shaft seal. Should be addressed quickly to prevent engine damage.
